Praying the Psalms: Psalm 139

Psalm 139 is a bumper of a psalm! It’s been considered as the ‘crown of psalms’. Popular not only in our current time but its superscription addresses the choir director, indicating that it was to be sung by the masses! It is a sweet expression of God’s intimacy in our lives, the breadth of his knowledge and his unfathomable and deep deep (needs to be said twice) love for us.

When I meditate on Psalm 139, I’m reminded that God is a personal God. His involvement in our lives is so intimate that (v.4) he knows our thoughts before we utter them. I’m reminded of a loving God, in pursuit of us constantly. That no matter where we go (v.7) we can never escape from [His] Spirit. We can never get away from [His] presence. I have a close friend who is currently in chemo battling with her second bout of cancer in 10 years. She loves that saying that “If God feels so distant….guess who moved?”  She smiles when she tells me and I’m pretty sure that she loves it because it reminds her of God’s steadfast love, the one that never ceases. Never moves away.

God was personally involved in the formation of our bodies in the womb (vs. 13-16)

Boom!

I’ll never forget the moment we saw our first picture (scan) of our daughters in the womb and the preceding months when they developed into fully formed babies and all those books I read about the miracle of life that led me to conclude that this, in itself, is beyond comprehension.  Then, after all that amazingness of creating our human bodies, God continues to think and care for us in our everyday.

(vs. 17-18) How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand. And when I wake up, you are still with me.

Be blessed that God’s infinite love surrounds you and your thoughts and cares, always.
