Praying the Psalms: Psalm 147

Psalm 147 reads to me like someone has just burst into the Temple (in anger? in desperation? with cynicism?) and exclaimed: Why? Why should we praise God?

This psalm is the response and, when we’re talking about a loving, creator Father who is sovereign over all, the answer is bound to be comprehensive.

Praise him because He is a healer: of deep emotional pain and deep physical pain.

Praise him because He is sovereign.

Praise him because He has creative direction of the universe.

Praise him because He is omnipotent and omniscient.

Praise him because His currency for raising up a man is different to ours—he raises up the humble, he casts down the wicked.

Praise him because He’s the weather controller.

Praise him because His delight is not in athletic prowess but in those who fear Him and hope in His love.

Praise him because He pours out security, prosperity, peace and generational blessing on those who fear Him and hope in His love.

And praise him because He recognises you. Specifically cares for you. Like no one else.

If you’re wondering why it’s good to praise Him, it’s because it is this God you’re responding to, it’s this God to who you’re ascribing ultimate worth as you worship Him.

Should we praise Him? Heck, yes! Let me count the ways.
