Praying the Psalms: Psalms 97

Some days I’m more aware of my absolute need for God’s grace than others.

It’s not the other days I think I’m just fine on my own, it’s more that some days I’m a little more flawed and deluded in my awareness of that need.

The great comfort and hope in a psalm like Psalm 97 is that the Lord reigns over all. The God in whom I place my trust, His Son in whom I place the hope of my salvation, is mighty. He is righteous and just. And his reign and righteousness mean that He is more than able, qualified and equipped to extend the grace that I so desperately need.

This Psalm declares a whole lot about God’s power and might and wisdom. And that’s great. Yet the hope that I find is that not only is my Lord mighty, but he is also mighty to save. That the One who created the glassy river that I ran beside this morning, is able to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all I can ask or think. He is able to rescue me from the miry clay. he is able to place my feet on the solid rock of Christ Jesus.

All else melts like wax before the Lord of all the earth. All else submits to His rule. And righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. To God be the glory!
