Praying the Psalms: Psalm 150

Psalm 150 reminds me of Big Kev.

In 2002, Big Kev with his 135kg frame and multi coloured shirts which looked more like a small tent, sold washing detergent on TV. He believed in his washing detergent. He was passionate about the concentration levels, and the fact that is was 100% Australian made. His catchphrase was “I’m excited”. That looks underwhelming when you write it like that. It was more like “AAAAAAHHHHHHM EXSOIIIIIIIITED!!!!!”

I never understood Big Kev, and just like that really witty one-liner that you think of 45 minutes after you’ve left the conversation, I realised today, that the reason why I thought he was a little strange was because he got excited about the trivial, as opposed to the crucial.

In the last two weeks, I’ve got excited at scoring a 79- point word on Words with Friends, and successfully assembling a bookshelf from Super A-Mart.

I need this reminder. Psalm 150 is imploring me to get excited. To get excited to the point where I cannot help but praise God for his mighty works, his unequalled greatness. I am guilty of not lifting my eyes and taking the time to reflect and observe God’s works and greatness in my life, and as a response to that reflection, get excited at the hand of God on my life. That turns me into a Big Kev. That’s not who I want to be.

Psalm 150 demonstrates to me that as God reveals his greatness—a small, tiny understanding of his unequalled greatness—it MUST cause a response.  It is truth too good to keep bottled up. Whether it is our most extravagant alabaster box offering, or a simple, quiet heartfelt prayer, let’s allow ourselves to get excited at what God has done for us.
